My name is Ashanti Nedrick and as you may know, I am a SEEK student here at CCNY. I am from Brooklyn, New York but originally from Upstate NY. I come from a small family in which college wasn’t really a goal that was ever achieved. After being a high school graduate in 2020, I decided that college was the next step for me. During my senior year, I thought about college a lot. I had questions like “what was online school going to be like for me?” or “What kind of classes will i be taking?” or even “Will I be able to handle the stress and workload during my first year?”. I was kind of scared of college because of how teachers made it seem of course. They would remind us again and again of the expectations in which I knew because of the amount of college classes I was taking at different colleges like Columbia, NYU, BMCC and even City Tech. Taking classes at those colleges made me realize that I can handle the “college work” and it influenced me to determine my major and what kind of career field I want to explore as well. I took classes that were based on STEM careers which then led me to choose the major I have now. Being a biology major is difficult and challenging, but it’s the challenge that drives me to maintain focus, do my best and work hard for a good grade which is part of the reason why I choose it as my major. I choose biology because it directs me towards the medical field. I choose biology as my major because it’s the major that comes with obstacles in which I am not afraid to accept failure and learn from my mistakes. I decided to go to college to learn the means of commitment and learn the expectations of my career field. I want to learn new things and grow from it so that I can inform others in which I enjoy doing. I hope that in the future, I am a great doctor and that I enjoy being a doctor. I hope that I help people in need in the future and inform people about health issues and alternatives to things that people are unknown to. I want to explore other parts of the world and help people who can’t get the help that they need. I hope to help my family and become someone that they can depend on.
